Jody’s philosophy about teaching is simple. When we are focused on learning we are focused on what student’s need.  Sometimes the subject matter in our classrooms can’t compete with the day-to-day challenges of the lives of our students. The main ingredient we continue to strive for in our classrooms is building relationships and creating relevance with kids.

The research is clear, when students know you value them as a human being, not just another student; they will work harder for you and challenge you less. Jody also believes teachers don’t need any more theory and new, trendy programs with catchy names. Teachers need to be given research based, proven, practical strategies and applications that they can start implementing immediately – without throwing anything out that is working in their classroom. There simply is no time to waste in today’s classroom – student engagement, focus and enthusiasm for learning must be priority #1. Jody understands that students come into our classrooms and schools with different backgrounds and cultures and their cognitive abilities, assets and experiences are just as wide ranging.  Sometimes the only thing students have in common is their age! The “one size fits all” approach does not work.

Jody knows that one of the biggest challenges about “school” is that kids are not coming to school prepared and ready to learn and engage in a classroom setting.  Jody is dedicated to helping educators be successful through motivation, inspiration, humor and a common-sense approach to classroom management. Most importantly, she leaves educators with as many proven, practical strategies as she can. After all, it was a team of invested teachers and a very compassionate Dean of Students who once helped Jody, who returned home after too many weeks on the streets of Van Nuys California, say goodbye to that destructive pathway at age 15 – and get plugged into helping students with Special Needs – thus leading to a long career in education. That miracle -the miracle of connection, acceptance and continued learning happened in a classroom, led by enthusiastic, well-prepared, loving teachers and school staff.
